One of the biggest misconceptions with Herbalism is that it's only taking herbs. That is a major aspect of Herbalism but not the whole picture. From my education and experience in the field, Herbalism is more of a lifestyle and commitment to living a conscious healthier way of life. It includes aspects that apply to mind, body and spirit because they are all connected.
Most people when they come to me are searching for a quick fix herb. What can I take for this ailment and how long until I can ascertain the effect. Their mindset is trapped in prescription medicine and how quickly they can move on with their life. Herbalism is more in depth than disease and symptom management. The approach is holistic and every healing journey is unique to the individual. When our body begins to display signs and symptoms of distress through ailments and disease, it is usually a manifestation of lifestyle or beliefs. If you treat something bad enough, it will start to show signs of wear and tear. This is where most people start to seek medical attention concerning symptoms in the body.
Going to see your doctor is a great start, he/she can run tests on your blood and urine, screen body organs through ultrasound and narrow down the source of distress within the body. If a problem is discovered you have choices that you have to make. You may have to take medication in order to lower or control your ailment in addition to seeking a healthier lifestyle. This is where Herbalism can provide you a unique experience in your journey to improve your health.
In an Herbalist consultation, your first initial appointment can last from 45 min to 2 hours depending on your situation. Before each appointment, you are asked to fill out a detailed assessment form that covers physical, mental and social demands that assist the practitioner in assessing your needs. This assessment is discussed thoroughly during your first appointment.
After your appointment, you will receive and individualized assessment within 1-3 days. This can include tinctures, supplements, salves, infusions, teas among many other recommendations. Other recommendations may introduce alternative methods of therapies, prescribed diet changes, detailed exercises and relaxation techniques. Other forms of alternative therapies and solutions could be recommended including life coaching, relationship therapy / evaluation or another practitioner (reiki, reflexology, aromatherapy....); that can assist in the evolution for a healthier you.
Herbalist's endorse organic and plant based diets, they can gear a food regime that best suits your needs. Supplements, tinctures, herbs, teas, and infusions can be prescribed to help the organs recover from stress related illness (anxiety, depression, stressful lives). Herbs can also be used in preventive measures.
A consultation is in-depth and covers the major organs within the body in addition to mind and social aspects. Remember Herbalism falls under the category of Holistic Medicine definitively as "characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease." Herbalism is not about masking symptoms it's getting to the root of the issue that caused the symptoms and promoting the best atmosphere for healing.
Herbalism can promote weight loss, assist in repairing body systems and treatments of anxiety, depression and nervous system issues to name a few of its benefits.
I would recommend an Herbalist for those seeking a healthier lifestyle. Herbalist's treatments benefit children, families, elderly, athletes, people who live busy lives, health oriented people, those wanting to live a more organic/plant based diet, people suffering from ailments, people wanting to escape the excessive prescription medicine use, basically everyone.
